Gotthard Panorama Express scenic train

The Gotthard Panorama Express connects 2 of the prettiest parts of Switzerland by boat and by train: central Switzerland and the Italian-speaking Canton Ticino. There are daily connections from Lucerne to either Locarno or Lugano or vice versa.

Conditions for Interrail Pass holders

Lucerne – Flüelen by ferry  

For the ferry part of this route, Pass holders get a 50% discount on the fare of the boat trip across Lake Lucerne. You can make your reservations for the Gotthard Panorama Express on the Swiss Railways website

 

Flüelen – Lugano by train

For the train part of this route, Pass holders pay a surcharge (reservation fee and class difference) for the Gotthard Panorama Express. All seats on the panorama train are exclusively 1st class, meaning that 1st class Pass holders only have to pay the reservation, while 2nd class Pass holders also have to pay the class difference.

1st class:

  • Reservation fee: 24 CHF (approx. €27)
  • Ferry ticket with 50% discount: 41 CHF (approx. €44)

2nd class:

  • Reservation fee: 24 CHF (approx. €27)
  • Class upgrade Arth Goldau – Lugano: 20 CHF (approx. €21)
  • Ferry ticket with 50% discount: 41 CHF (approx. €44)

 

Travel on a regular regional train

You can also travel on normal regional trains on the same route, without panorama carriages. These trains have both 1st and 2nd class seats which allows Interrail Pass holders to travel without a reservation fee.
