Oslo, Norway

Oslo is Norway's lively capital and a great place to start your journey. Visit the Royal Palace and do your best imitation of Edvard Munch's painting The Scream in the National Gallery. The young and young at heart can entertain themselves for a full day in the TusenFryd Amusement Park.

Travel from Oslo to Bergen on the Bergen Railway and get ready for an amazing journey. You'll see waterfalls, frozen lakes and herds of wild reindeer as the train brings you onto Europe's largest mountain platform. Get off in Myrdal for a trip on the steep Flåm Railway, which takes you down the mountain to the spectacular Aurlandjsfjord.

Bergen, Norway

Bergen is Norway's most charming city, located on the Byfjorden fjord and surrounded by tall mountains. Walk through the old city centre to admire the wooden buildings in Bryggen and the always lively Fish Market. For the best view of the area, take the cable car up to Mount Ulriken.

Let the Bergen Railway take you back to Oslo and make sure you sit on the other side of the train. From Oslo, let the Dovre Railway carry you to Trondheim. This wonderful scenic route will take you through wetlands and mountain ranges where trolls are said to live!

Trondheim, Norway

Trondheim is an old town that used to be the country's capital in the Viking Age. These days it's a student town with much to see. Check out the Nidaros Cathedral and the Archbishop's Palace, which has been turned into a museum. Visit Munkolmen Island in the Trondheim fjord to learn more about Norse history.

The Nordland Railway will take you as far north as north goes: above the Arctic Circle. This is quite a long trip, so we advise you to travel by night and get some sleep along the way. Don't forget to look out of the train window for a first peek of the breathtaking Northern Lights.

Bodo, Norway

The northernmost stop of the Nordland Railway is Bodo. It's a haven for hikers, who can spend days discovering the region's nature reserves. The nearby Lofoten Islands are a great place for cycling, rock-climbing or setting out to sea to spot killer whales. It's also one of the best places in the world to see the Northern Lights.

If you want to see more of Scandinavia, you can take a bus up to Narvik. This town is connected by train to Kiruna in Sweden. If you're travelling with an Interrail Global Pass, you can combine this itinerary with our Sweden itinerary.
