Travel in your own country

Interrail Passes are designed to offer you the best of rail travel abroad. Therefore, you cannot use an Interrail One Country Pass to travel in your own country. Depending on your country of residence, an Interrail Global Pass is valid for travel in your country of residence during one outbound journey and one inbound journey that occur during travel days at any point in your trip.

With your Interrail Pass, you can travel on trains operated by the national railway companies.

Travelling in your country of residence

We want our Passes to be as flexible as our travellers, so if you're travelling with an Interrail Global Pass, you can generally use it to travel in your country of residence during one outbound journey and one inbound journey (with multiple train transfers included) that occur during travel days at any point in your trip. Outbound and inbound journeys are not extra travel days.

For some countries in Europe, travellers get more than one inbound and outbound journey – see the list of countries below for more details:

Country Total inbound/outbound journeys
Sweden 4
Norway 4
Greece 4
Austria 3
Switzerland 3
Turkey 4
Czech Republic 3
Hungary 3
The Netherlands 3
Romania 4
Slovakia 3
Belgium 3
Luxembourg 3
Poland 3
All other countries 2

If you need more than the allocated outbound and inbound journeys, you can always buy additional point-to-point tickets from your country’s rail carrier.

All journeys must be made during the overall validity period of your Pass. If you have a Pass with flexible travel days, such as 10 days within 2 months, and want to use it to leave from or return to your country of residence, those journeys must occur during your travel days. Remember that you have until midnight on each travel day to travel on trains for which your Pass is valid.

Please note that the Interrail Benelux Pass is valid in 3 countries. So if you're a Dutch resident, you can use this pass for travel in Belgium and Luxembourg.

Travel in your own country with a mobile Pass

When you travel with a mobile Pass, the app will automatically recognize an outbound or inbound journey, based on your country of residence. You can use these journeys in your country at any stage of your Pass’ validity.

If an outbound or inbound journey applies to the train ride you're adding to your Pass, you'll get a popup telling you that you will be using one of the two available inbound or outbound journeys. You have to approve this before you can add your train journey to your Pass.

Keep in mind that when you want to travel from one country to another, and you have to travel through your country of residence, the app will apply both the inbound and the outbound journey to this trip.

Travel in your own country with a paper Pass

In addition to marking your travel days in the travel calendar of your Pass, if you use an outbound or inbound journey during your travel days to leave from or return to your country of residence, you should mark those dates on the special boxes for outbound (leaving) and inbound (returning) in the My Trip that comes with your Pass. Keep in mind that the outbound trip to leave your country of residence doesn’t have to come before your inbound journey depending on how you planned your trip. Click on the image to see an example of how to fill in these details.

In order to travel in your country of residence, it must be 1 of the 33 Interrail member countries included in the Pass. You can only travel with the railway companies included in the Interrail Pass.
