Trenitalia (FS Group) And Interrail B.V.: The Digital Pass for European Rail Travel Arrives
Open Sales and Distribution Model (OSDM) adoption enables smoother access to Interrail Passes and simplified purchasing for travellers and travel agencies
Utrecht, The Netherlands, 4 May 2026
Purchasing an Interrail Pass is now easier than ever, with a fully digital experience. Interrail B.V. and Trenitalia (FS Group) have announced a strategic turning point in their partnership: with the integration of the OSDM (Open Sales and Distribution Model) standard, the Interrail Pass is now available in digital format and can be purchased directly on trenitalia.com, as well as at Trenitalia ticket offices and agencies within the Trenitalia network.
The new connectivity streamlines the distribution processes for Interrail Passes—the solution that enables rail travel in 33 European countries and over 30,000 destinations—ensuring a smoother and more immediate purchasing experience for both travellers and distribution network partners. Adopting the OSDM standard enables structured communication between the sales platforms of various railway operators, ensuring more efficient distribution and greater commercial flexibility across the entire European rail network.
This milestone is a step forward for the existing strong partnership between the two organisations. Trenitalia already includes Frecce, Intercity, and Regional trains within the Interrail Pass network—subject to seat reservations for high-speed trains directly in the Interrail B.V. Rail Planner app—and is also supporting the project through its One Country Pass for Italy offer to international customers. The implementation of OSDM connectivity marks the natural evolution of this collaboration, strengthening the digital infrastructure supporting rail mobility and international sales.
This integration into the Trenitalia sales system simplifies access to Interrail Passes, facilitating the creation of packages and the promotion of international rail travel. Improved connectivity also fosters the ongoing evolution of the digital Interrail Pass ecosystem, allowing travellers to instantly choose and receive the Pass best suited to their European itinerary, with the ability to plan and manage their trips directly through the Rail Planner app.
While the nature of the Interrail Pass remains unchanged, bolstering its digital integration increases its accessibility and enhances sales opportunities throughout the entire Italian and international distribution channel.
“Digital connectivity is crucial to the future of international rail sales,” said Özlem Birkalan, Chief Brand and Commercial Officer at Interrail B.V. “This milestone achieved with Trenitalia represents a huge step forward towards a more integrated rail ecosystem. By strengthening the distribution and access methods for our products, we are helping an ever-increasing number of travellers discover the beauty of exploring Europe by train.”
“Our collaboration with Interrail B.V. makes Europe even closer and more accessible,” emphasised Francesco Cacciapuoti, Sales Director at Trenitalia. “Thanks to the new digital connectivity, purchasing a Pass on trenitalia.com becomes a simple and immediate gesture. Our goal is to give travellers the freedom to enjoy an authentic and profound experience, transforming train travel from a simple journey into the beating heart of a boundless adventure.”
"This project is fully in line with the strategic path that Trenitalia is pursuing at the European level to make train travel increasingly simple and accessible, even beyond national borders," said Federica Santini, Director of Strategies & Traveler Experience at Trenitalia. "The digital integration of the Interrail Pass through the OSDM standard is a concrete example of how common protocols can translate into tangible benefits for passengers and partners, simplifying interoperability and access to services and strengthening the role of the train as a cornerstone of sustainable European mobility."
This latest advancement strengthens the digital foundation of the Interrail Pass experience, helping to offer the best mobility options for traversing the continent. In an era when people are seeking increasingly meaningful and sustainable ways to explore, train travel continues to offer one of the most personal ways to do it — where the journey itself becomes part of the story.
