24 hours in Lisbon

You'll have a great time spending 24 hours in Lisbon. The city has a relaxed vibe and there's beauty around every corner. You can see much of it in a single day and our list of highlights below will help you on the way.

The Alfama and Sao Jorge Castle

9AM // A beautiful maze

The Alfama and São Jorge Castle

Start your 24 hours in Lisbon in its oldest district, the Alfama. Make your way uphill through its narrow streets by foot or by tram, and grab some breakfast at one of the many miradouros (viewpoints).

At the top of the hill you'll find the São Jorge Castle, a Moorish citadel that was later used as the Portuguese royal residence. Climb the impressive walls for the very best view of Lisbon and the Tagus river.

Monument to the Discoveries, Lisbon

12AM // The Age of Discoveries

Belem and the Jerónimos Monastery

Take a train to Belém and the famous 16th century Belém Tower. From here, Magellan and Vasco Da Gama set out to explore the world, forever marked by the impressive Discoveries Monument.

Visit the nearby Jerónimos Monastery, another landmark that symbolises the Age of Discoveries. And after seeing all of Belém's highlights, step into a bakery and order a delicious Pastel de Belém.

Pena Palace, Sintra

2PM // Pick your Trip

Sintra or Cascais?

Do you like mountains, forests and architecture? Then you should visit the historic town of Sintra, just 45 minutes away by train. Marvel over the ancient Castle of the Moors and the colourful Pena Palace.

Do you like beaches, good food and a bit of glamour? Spend your afternoon relaxing at Cascais, a coastal town just an hour away by train. Enjoy the sun while walking around or take a nap on the beach!

Funicular in the Bairro Alto, Lisbon

6PM // Heart of the City

Baixa-Chiado and the Bairro Alto

Take the train back to the city and head to the Baixa-Chiado area, with enough shops to keep you occupied for hours. Not a shopper? Sit down at the famous Café A Brasileira for a good cup of coffee!

When the sun sets over Lisbon, the Bairro Alto (Upper District) is where you want to be. Take your pick from the many restaurants on the sloped streets, and try the Bacalhau a Bras, a local specialty.

Lisbon at night

9PM // Lisbon by night

Fado and fruit cocktails

The Bairro Alto has plenty of bars where you can spend your evening. If you're up for it, check out some live Fado music - melancholic and soulful songs that are deeply imbedded in Portuguese heritage.

Finish your night in style at one of Lisbon's hidden cocktails bars. You'll find yourself back in the 1920's at Procópio Bar and Bar A Parodia. Enjoy a good cocktail and plan your next 24 hours in Lisbon!
