What is the difference between 1st and 2nd class?

The difference between 1st and 2nd class rail travel is the level of comfort and the facilities provided. 1st class Interrail passes are more expensive than 2nd class passes.

Seats are usually larger and more comfortable, and there is more legroom in 1st class coaches than in 2nd  class. There is also greater luggage space. 1st class coaches are almost always less crowded than 2nd class.

On certain trains, 1st class travellers may get the following, especially on high-speed trains:

  • Complimentary drink and snack

  • Free newspaper

  • WiFi internet connection

  • Power sockets

1st class Interrail pass also entitles you to travel in 2nd  class coaches.

Please keep in mind that not all trains are equipped with 1st class cars. For instance, Norway only has 2nd class cars on all trains.
