Reservations for night trains are always compulsory. The reservation fee varies depending on the type of sleeping accommodation you choose. Advance booking is recommended for domestic and international trains in high-season and during peak times. Some trains have a limited number of seats for InterRail travellers.
For some domestic trains advance reservations are compulsory or recommended. Below is a list of the domestic trains that require reservations, plus an indication of the reservation fee.
There are no compulsory reservations for domestic trains in Austria, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Luxembourg, FYR Macedonia and Montenegro. For long distance trains in Turkey is a free reservation possible, but not required.
Reservations are particularly recommended during the high season. Some trains (Thalys and TGV) have a limited number of seats for InterRail pass holders.
You may be able to make reservations before your trip at main train stations in your country or during your trip at most international train stations. It’s also possible to make reservations through the Deutsche Bahn rail company. More about how to make reservations

It is recommended to make reservations in advance for night trains, particularly during peak times – if the night train you’re expecting to get on is full, you don’t want to be stuck with nowhere to sleep! - Click on ‘Purchase’ or ‘Check availability’ (ignore the prices) for the train of your choice.
- At the bottom of the page click on ‘Book only extra charge’.
- On the next page select ‘Pass offer (InterRail)’.
- You can then choose the type of seat or sleeping accommodation you would like. Prices are shown for the different options.
- You can choose online tickets, which you can print (it is possible to have tickets posted but there is an additional charge).
