  • Do I need an Interrail or a Eurail pass? 

    An Interrail pass can only be used by European citizens and official residents. Non-European citizens can use a Eurail pass instead, available from Eurail.com. If you aren't a European citizen, but you can prove that you live in Europe, you can use an Interrail pass.

  • What is a travel day? 

    A travel day lasts 24 hours from midnight to midnight. On each travel day you have access to the train networks where your Interrail pass is valid.

  • What is a "continuous" pass? 

    The Interrail pass is available with different numbers of travel days. With a continuous pass, every day is a potential travel day. In contrast, a flexi pass has a fixed number of travel days to use whenever you want while your pass is valid.

  • What does 5 days within 15 days mean? 

    If you order an Interrail Global Pass - 5 days within 15 days, this means you can choose any 5 days to travel on within a period of 15 days.

    The travel days do not have to be consecutive. You can decide when to use them during your trip. A pass like this is ideal if you don't plan on travelling every single day. Below are your options:

    5 travel days within 15 days or 7, 10 or 15 travel days within 1 month.

    3, 4, 6 or 8 travel days within 1 month.

  • When do I need to make train reservations? 

    Train reservations are required on most high-speed trains and all night trains. The Interrail Premium Pass includes free reservations. For all other Interrail passes, additional reservation fees are not included.

    It's often possible to avoid reservations by taking a slower, alternative route.

  • What is my country of residence? 

    Your country of residence is the country in which you live and/or have citizenship of. You can find it printed on your Interrail pass in the top-right corner.

    The Interrail One Country Pass can't be used for travel in your country of residence. With the Interrail Global Pass, you can make 2 journeys in your country of residence.

  • Can I travel with Interrail in my own country? 

    If you have an Interrail Global Pass, it's valid for 2 journeys in your country of residence. You can use one journey for outbound travel and the other for inbound travel. Read more about travel in your own country. You may not use an Interrail One Country Pass to travel in your own country.

    Please note that the Interrail Benelux Pass is valid in 3 countries. So if you're a Dutch resident, you can use this pass for travel in Belgium and Luxembourg.

  • What is the difference between 1st and 2nd class? 

    The difference between 1st and 2nd class rail travel is the level of comfort and the facilities provided. 1st class Interrail passes are more expensive than 2nd class passes.

  • How does the 7 p.m. rule work?  

    It’s very useful to know about the 7 p.m. rule if you have a flexi pass (e.g. Global Pass - 10 days within 1 month) as it can save you precious travel days. The rule means that you only need to use 1 travel day when travelling on a direct night train that departs after 7 p.m. (19:00) and arrives at its final stop after 4 a.m. (04:00).

  • How far in advance can I order an Interrail pass? 

    You can order an Interrail pass 11 months before you start your Interrail trip.


    When you order your Interrail pass, you'll need to enter the date when you want to start travelling with your pass. This date is printed on your Interrail pass as your start date. You can order your pass anywhere within the 11 months before this date.
